Preheat the oven to approx. 180 °C. Line a baking tray with a higher edge with baking paper.
Cream butter with powdered sugar, vanilla, lemon zest and salt. Add the eggs one by one and mix the dough until very fluffy: With a food processor this takes about 5 minutes, with a hand mixer 10 minutes.
Finally, mix in the flours mixed with baking powder alternately with the milk using a wooden spoon.
Spread the dough on the baking sheet and sprinkle with the cherries. Bake on the middle shelf for about 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
Sprinkle the cooled cake with powdered sugar.
