Cream butter and powdered sugar, vanilla, a little rum, salt and grated lemon zest, then gradually add the egg yolks, then the ground poppy seeds. Beat the stiff beaten egg whites with granulated sugar and fold into the mixture. Pour the mixture into a buttered and floured cake pan and bake over a moderate heat for about 1 hour. Cool, remove and sugar all around.
